The Macallan 18 year old is a whisky held in high-esteem. Traditionally aged in sherry casks it has more recently been aged in both sherry and bourbon casks, and labelled ‘Fine Oak’.
The nose on the Macallan 18 year old is rather rich and floral, with a soft fruitiness that is common among Macallan whiskies. There is also a moderate smokiness present.
The Macallan 18 is undoubtedly a smooth whisky. Its has a full, creamy body that supports flavors of sherry, spice, oak, citrus, smoke and a syrupy sweetness. All in all an extremely pleasant experience and a fine example of how to do a sherry-aged whisky.
The finish is beautiful, with a medium to long finish that is warm and smile-inducing, with a good amount of fruitiness accompanying.
There’s no doubt that the Macallan 18 year old is a good whisky. The real question relates to its price. It’s much more expensive than a lot of other 18 year old whiskies. While its smooth and delicious, I don’t find myself seeking out this whisky despite my enjoyment of it, purely because of how much it costs.
